ABUTILON AURITUM

Abutilon auritum (ear-like) is found in Australia in Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory and Western Australia.

It is a soft-wooded shrub from 1 to about 3 metres with young shoots covered with soft hairs. It provides a showy display of flowers, with bright yellow 2 cm blooms carried in terminal sprays. The attractive seed capsules remain on the plant for some time. The bush flowers freely over a long period. The 5 - 10 cm leaf provides a visual contrast when planted with other species of Australian native hibiscus. The leaf has finely toothed margins and is green and slightly hairy above and densely white underneath.

The plant can become straggly unless pruned regularly. It requires a sunny position with good drainage and is somewhat frost tender. It will grow in broken sunlight but will not flower as heavily as in full sun.

Propagation is from seed or cuttings.
